Intersection I (Morton Feldman)

A realization of Morton Feldman’s graphic score Intersection I for large orchestra, for a recording by the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, conducted by Brad Lubman. Released on the album Morton Feldman: Orchestra (Mode Records, 2011).

Feldman’s score specifies only whether a performer plays a high, middle, or low note, as well as a general timeframe within which that note is played. Due to time constraints during the recording session, I was asked to create a score with a more specific notation.

After extensive research, including interviews with people who had worked closely with Feldman, I developed an approach that preserved his compositional philosophy. I recorded local musicians, comprising all of the orchestral instruments, as they played their individual parts from the graphic score. I then transcribed those performances into proportional notation, creating 60 individual parts for the musicians of the DSO Berlin.

The recording is available on Bandcamp, Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.

I also wrote an article about the experience for NewMusicBox, as well as the liner notes for the album.
