Converted Melodies (2022)
35 melodies that can be played as a set or individually in any order, strictly as written or with any amount of interpretation.
I wrote these melodies in early 2022 for my friend Jashiin, to help him when his day job made it difficult to compose. At the end of each shift, he would count the number of customers he had that day, and I would convert each of them into a note of a melody he could listen to. That way his job could be music too.
I originally thought we would continue until the end of the year. Instead, the melodies ended when he fled Russia after its invasion of Ukraine—and they came to form a record of that period of change.
Once in his new home, he returned the gift with an album of his own versions of several of the melodies, available on Bandcamp.
